Kai is leaning against the wall when I exit the dungeon. I lock up and put the keys back on their hook on the wall. He moves toward me.

“How is he?”

“Not himself,” I tell him. “Do you know anything about the Fey?”

He shrugs. “Very little, like most. They’re a secretive species.”

I sigh, holding the blanket up as I consider my next move.

“What’s wrong?”

“He’s acting strangely. He doesn’t want to speak to me.”

Kai frowns. “That’s unusual once mates are identified. It’s harder to be apart than it is to be close. He must enjoy torturing himself.”

“I think he’s afraid.” I feel lost. I can’t help him. I don’t know what to do.

“Tell me about him,” Kai says, offering his hand. “We can walk together.”

I smile as I carefully keep my hands to myself. “We can get further walking without you making me weak at the knees.”

He shrugs again, not bothering to hide his smile. “Can’t blame a demon for trying, my pretty mate. Where do you wish to walk?”

“I need something from my bedroom.”

His eyes brighten. “Of course.”

I shake my head at him. He thinks we’re going there to mate. I can’t even really deny it. Chances are the moment we’re alone together I’ll get urges I can’t control. I’ll have a second mate bond completed by the time Bram is back.

He talks a little as we walk; making small talk over the paintings and ornaments we pass.

I answer or smile when it’s appropriate, operating as I do during my daily tasks when I’m convincing enough with my interactions that no one notices my thoughts are elsewhere.

I’m relieved when we get to my tower, realizing I’m weary and I want nothing more than to lay down and let sleep take my worries away.

Kai walks with me up the tower and insists on moving on ahead to hold the door open for me. I close it and move to the door to the servant’s quarters. I still have this idea that I want to keep my bed for Bram. I open the door and find a less grand but similar room to mine. I wonder if I’ll find plainer clothes in the wardrobe.

“I apologize for not being very gentlemanly when we first met,” he tells me. “I was thrown by the strength of my feelings for you.”

“You mean your attraction to me,” I tell him, as I walk inside and he closes the door behind me.

“You were born beautiful, I can’t deny that,” he says. “However, it was not physical attraction that made me desire to possess you the moment I set eyes on you.”

“It wasn’t?” I ask, a wry smile forming on my face.

“I could feel the strength in you, the kindness of your spirit. Everything that makes you who you are, Merle. It made me eager to claim you as my mate, to possess you before anyone else could steal you away.”

The naked hunger in his eyes is mesmerizing. I want to go to him, I want to allow him to possess me as he desires.
