âCome to me,â Alma said softly. âI will listen to you. I will be here with you. I Call you.â
Almost immediately, she was surrounded. But it was different. They didnât moan and wail; their energy pressing on her had changed.
âYou Called us,â one said. âYou will listen?â
âI will do my best. I cannot exact vengeance for you, but I can listen and try to help. If I do this, may I request your aid in exchange?â
Several voices answered at once and the clamor grew.
âYou must speak one at a time,â Alma urged. âI canât understand otherwise.â
For hours, she listened, sympathized, validated the poor souls trapped earthside. She found the validation piece was key. Telling them they had every right to be angry about what had happened to them was surprisingly calming to many. Wouldn't anyone be angry about deep betrayal by a loved one, or being yanked away from ones' family who likely wouldn't survive the loss? They were like anyone else who had been wronged, or at least felt they had, which might as well be the same thing. Ignoring them would never help, while acknowledging their pain was at least a step in the right direction.
Several hours later, Alma held up a hand.
âI have listened. I can help more of you later, but I need your help as well. I must escape this place, before I am led to the pyre to join your ranks. If that happens, there will be no one to hear you. I canât do this alone.â
A chorus of voices rang out, assuring her they could help her. She almost wept in relief.
âIâm not sure how this works. I have never Called or Casted with the aid of spirits. I want to try to Call one of you into me to see if your energy and strength can help me. Someone with intense emotion might have the most energetic power, but Iâm not sure.â
âMe,â one spirit woman said. âI can provide you with what you need.â
âThank you. What is your name?â
âIt was⦠It was Catalina.â
âThank you for your help, Catalina.â
Alma Called the woman, similarly to how she would Call to the gods and fates in order to read the cards, or Call on the earth to work with the herbs. She Called the spirit into herself.
It happened much more easily than she had expected. Suddenly her vision wasnât quite her vision, as though she saw out of her own eyes and someone elseâs as well. Her body felt indescribably different as well. Bigger and pulsing with energy, although when she looked down at herself, she appeared the same as ever.
She raised her chained hands and pulled gently, experimenting. To her amazement, the metal creaked. She pulled as hard as she could, and one of the links broke. One end of the broken chain snapped back and hit her across the cheek. It hurt, but the pain was secondary to the sight of her two hands able to move separately.
She immediately snapped the ankle chains as well.
