Prices and Paying

The few stores and services that will be mentioned later have been selected as representative examples of the types of shops in San Francisco that give good quality for the price—whatever the price. That does not mean that you will not find a bargain elsewhere, for you certainly will. Nor does it mean that a particular superstore will be inexpensive, but it is likely to offer the best prices available for that particular item. People do not bargain on prices, as a rule, but if the merchandise is damaged and you still want to buy it, you may be given a discount.

Except for some small shops, stores accept the major credit cards. A few might still take a personal check on a California bank when you produce photo identification, although fewer do so now that almost everyone has a credit or debit card. It is illegal for a shop to ask that a credit card be used as identification. Stores do not charge extra for using a credit card, but a few will offer a discount for cash.

Ask about the store’s refund policy. The large stores and chains generally make refunds with no questions asked if you bring back the merchandise and the receipt within a reasonable length of time—a week or so—and will also exchange ill-fitting goods for a larger or smaller size, or even a different color. Some stores will exchange for other merchandise only. Stores are not required to make refunds, and each store sets its own policy. If there is an unusual policy, such as “all sales final,” a notice is often displayed; this sign is also often displayed during a sale. If you have doubts, ask in advance.

The sales tax is added to the price of the item you purchase, not included on the price tag. In San Francisco the sales tax is 8.5 percent. This is not a value added tax, and foreign visitors do not receive a refund upon leaving the United States. There are duty free shops in the Union Square area.
