46. WHEN MARC MET HARRY

MARC VILLASENOR, LIFELONG CHICAGO NORTH SIDER

It was 1987, and the Cubs were playing the Expos.

We arrived at the ballpark early to try to get some autographs when we ran into Steve Stone, who took a second to chat with me from where he was setting up to air the lead-off-man show. That was sweet. We also got his and a few ballplayers’ autographs, including Tim Raines, on the Cubs visor that was the ballpark giveaway that day.

After walking around the ballpark for a while, which was OK for a twelveyear-old in those days, I bumped into a schoolmate and had a partner in crime. We ended up behind and underneath the press boxes and began to try to map a way up there visually.

Then we decided to give it a go. Not thinking about security or any other possible dangers, we began our venture. Sure enough, we—a pair of twelve-year-old boys—ended up on the very same catwalk where Harry Caray usually walked and waved. As we passed each door, we’d look in the one-foot-square window to see if the iconic announcer was behind that door. After about three or four doors, we came to the one where, on the other side, sat a man with a big white head of hair. Our eyes about popped out of our heads as we immediately looked at each other in amazement.
