I would love to take a moment and give credit where credit is due by pointing out the efforts of Room 40. This organization was in existence from 1914 to 1919, but in its short lifetime it made a tremendous impact on the course of history, in my opinion. Its code-breaking efforts led to the tracking of German naval movements in the North Sea and affected the outcomes of a handful of engagements, including the Battle of Jutland (which was the only major full-scale naval battle of World War I). It has been suggested that the biggest event Room 40 was involved in was the Zimmermann note, as mentioned here.
