Crypto knelt in front of the doors. The lock had a keypad. He could physically plow through it, but the noise would draw too much attention.

Diana knelt next to him. “If you had kept them alive, we could have forced them to key in the code.” She seemed upset.

“One less slaver in the universe. I have no regrets.”

She pulled out a device from her belt pouch and attached it to the lock. “It's a good thing I'm here or you would have needed to ram your way inside.” The device’s screen turned green and she pulled the door open. She was a professional thief after all.

He stole a quick kiss. “You are awesome.” He pressed past her, blaster held at the ready.

They entered a chamber and faced another lock pad requiring a palm print.

“Wait here,” he said. Crypto returned to the bodies and pressed his palm to one of theirs. “Copy,” he ordered his nanobots. The skin on his hand itched as it shifted. He returned to Diana's side and pressed his hand to the scanner. The door slid open and he went through first, blaster ready.

“How the heck did you open that?” She peered at the scanner then tried to grab his hand. “Did you cut off the guard’s hand?”

“Focus, Diana. I'll show you later.” They had entered a long hall the length of the building with doors leading to each side. A screen was next to each door. Crypto was familiar with the layout of these types of quarters, having already rescued slaves from similar installations in the past. He pressed his new thumb pad to the viewer and it showed what was inside the room.

Two humans lay asleep on cots on each side of the wall. He went to the tech room by the entrance. The wall over the control panel was mounted with viewers. Each room had the same number of occupants. Every room was full. “Forty.” Crypto faced Diana. “I didn't think there would be so many. Hack had reported only a handful of humans were taken from the cruise ship.”

“Forty?” Diana shook her head. “My boat can't hold that many people. One big swell and we'll capsize.”

Crypto rubbed his head. “Hack, Trace?” No response. He banged the back of his head against the wall.

“We need a Plan B.” She stared at the viewers, her voice filled with dismay.

He straightened and ushered Diana to the exit.

“Where are we going?”

“Back to the boat.”

“But the people… We can't leave them here.”

“We can't help them if we're caught either, and the longer we stand here debating, the less chance of us escaping.”

She bared her teeth at him, the feral display setting him on fire. She was suicidally courageous. He'd always been attracted to strong females, but he'd been led to believe that humans were weak and frail. The ones he'd met at the resort had confirmed this belief. They had only faked interest then asked about his financial portfolio.

Diana yanked from his touch and moved to the exit under her own power.
