“This shit is strictly for business and appearances only. These are my folks and I do business with them but I ain’t grow up surrounded by them so you know the bond is kind of different. We really ain’t start forming a bond until I turned eighteen and started you know, doing my thing. Maceo was the only one I really had that true familial bond with because he moved to Tampa when I turned eighteen and we were thick as thieves,” I informed Yola as we pulled in front of my grandfather’s house in the middle of Mexico.

“I know you keep saying that you are okay but are you really?” Yola offered me a sympathetic smile.

“I’m straight. I just wanted to set the tone.”

She was beautiful as fuck in the black wrap dress with her hair pulled up into a sleek bun. Squeezing Yola’s hand for reassurance, she flashed me a faint smile. I loved the fuck out of this girl. She probably would’ve much rather be anywhere but here, around a bunch of motha fuckas mourning the bitch who kidnapped her in an attempt to extort money for drugs from me. Yet here she stood, pretty.

I made this trip monthly to chop it up with my Uncle Macario but this time was different. We just left my mother’s funeral and now our immediate family was gathering for the repast. Truthfully, I was indifferent about Priscilla’s death. I planned to kill the bitch myself but I guess the drugs got to her first. When I arrived at the rehab the nurses informed me that Priscilla had taken off a few minutes before I pulled up.

After watching the devastation that Priscilla’s death caused my Uncle Macario, I couldn’t bring myself to tell him that Priscilla played a hand in Maceo’s demise. He lost his son last year and now we were burying his sister, that was some terrible shit to swallow. Papá wasn’t doing so well either, Priscilla was his only girl and watching them mourn her broke my heart, but the death was expected. Now I was faced with a secret that I wasn’t sure what to do with since Priscilla was dead. Initially, I planned to find Priscilla and take her to my uncle and grandfather so she could answer for what she did to Maceo. Now that she was dead, maybe I would just let sleeping dogs lie. Exposing the truth would only open old wounds.

“Alejandro,” my uncle greeted me in a somber expression. As he walked in my direction, my grandfather Hector was right behind him.

“Hey unc and Papá, this is my girl Yola. Yola, this is my Uncle Macario and my grandfather Hector,” I made the introductions.

“Ella es una hermosa mujer negra,” Papá stated, with a mug on his face.

“What the fuck did he just say?” Yola snapped her neck in my direction, forcing me to laugh.

“Relax, bae. Ella es una hermosa mujer negra means she is a beautiful black woman.”

A regretful expression washed over Yola’s face as her eyes darted towards my grandfather.
