Chapter Fourteen

Tracy stepped inside the station, glad of the warmth compared to outside, tired after a fitful night, her dreams full of Lisa and the hassle she could cause if she didn’t sod off out of the picture. Damon had noticed — they lived together now instead of renting two separate places like they had in the city — mentioning she’d kicked out at him a few times. She must have been fighting in her sleep. Probably warding off her father, and John, her old chief, a man who’d shown her ‘love’ as a child — a love she hadn’t wanted.

The only words for it? Sexual abuse, no love about it.

She debated whether to go and visit Vic on the front desk, see if he had any news for her that had come in overnight, left for him to relate to her from the sergeant who manned the desk in the dark hours. She ought to, really, but fancied getting another coffee down her neck before tackling anything. The one she’d had at home hadn’t done a thing to perk her up.

A Winter coffee, that would be nice.

She headed up the three flights of stairs after Damon. He went left into the incident room, she went right to Winter’s corridor. It was still early, a few minutes until eight when the rest of the team would turn up, so she could afford a natter with the chief. Besides, she wanted Winter to tell her what was going on with Kane, except she’d have to act surprised or nonchalant and make out she hadn’t heard any of their conversation.

At his door, she knocked then entered at his call to come in. He stood at the filing cabinet, staring at his coffee maker, the carafe thankfully full, just intermittent drops dripping in from the filter.

“Morning, sir.” She smiled as brightly as she could and shifted her focus to the machine.

“I knew I shouldn’t have offered you a coffee the first time.” He grinned. “Let me give you that link now before you drink my stash dry. I forgot to send it before.” He moved to the desk, scribbled on a pad, and ripped the page off. “Here you go.”

“Thanks.” She folded then slid it into her pocket.

“You want one, I take it?” He raised his eyebrows.

“That’s what I’m here for. You can smell it down the corridor.” She sat once he’d gestured for her to take a seat, crossing her legs at the ankles and thinking how sad it would be to get on his bad side if he found out about Lisa.

He poured the drinks, and she kept her mouth shut until he’d settled behind his desk. The first sip had her closing her eyes and wishing she was in sunny climes drinking it on a balcony overlooking a beach instead of this cold, austere office in a dreary UK town.

“Do you want to start?” he asked.

“May as well.” She took a deep breath. “Kane turned up early evening yesterday. He was on Nada’s computer — no one else was around.
