Friedrich Wöhler and Justus Liebig

Even though chemists as a group are not noted for their great beauty, Friedrich Wöhler was an outstandingly homely man. However this did not hamper him from learning chemistry from his father’s books and building a laboratory in his father’s home. When he went to Heidelberg to study, he already knew so much chemistry that he did not have to attend lectures, and he probably never did. When he began teaching in Berlin, his laboratory was the former rooms of Count Ruggiero, who had been hanged as an alchemical swindler. It is not clear which if any of these circumstances were responsible for Wöhler’s pleasant, relaxed approach to life, but he was able to go benignly through some stormy times, well buffered by his humor. It is probably for the good of chemistry that Wöhler was able to maintain the attitude he did, otherwise his eventual friendship and collaboration with Liebig would not have been possible. Liebig’s attitude toward life was considerably more combative than Wöhler’s.
