Chapter 6

Finding Your Identity in Christ

Johannah Leach

How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know Him. Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when He appears, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.

—1 JOHN 3:1-2

THE POWER OF IDENTITY

Our identity is the way in which we think about ourselves and the way the world views us. It is who we are, and is made up of the characteristics that define us. What is your identity? How does the world see you? Who are you and what characteristics define you? In the beautiful scripture that opens this chapter the apostle John tells us that we will know fully who we are when we see Jesus face to face. We can see Him now on this earth, just not in all His fullness.

If you are living outside of God’s will for your life, your identity will reflect as much. The world will not see Christ in you and neither will you. That’s when a sense of condemnation can creep into your life. But the good news is that when you accept Jesus into your heart, and His Holy Spirit comes to live in you, the power of sin over you is broken. Then you can begin to learn what it means to fully abandon yourself to Him and live wholeheartedly for Jesus every day. This is how you become an overcomer, no longer bound by sin, and you can kick condemnation to the curb where it belongs. As you begin to fulfill your God-given identity, there isn’t anything holding you back from His presence, because the veil that once separated us from God has been torn in two by Jesus.

Living every day for Jesus in full abandonment is a choice, though, and it requires grace, faith, and hope if you are going to fulfill your destiny in Him. But where do you get characteristics like grace, faith, and hope? They come from God, and He will supply them as you learn to love and honor yourself. When you open yourself up to the One who loved you first and called you by name, you can begin to see yourself through His eyes and realize your true identity is actually in God, your heavenly Father, not in the things of the world. When you love and honor yourself, when you abandon yourself completely to God, your true identity will begin to unfold.

The person God created you to be is beautiful, smart, fun, caring, loving, cheerful, a joy to be around, and uniquely designed to add something to this world that no other person can bring. God wants you to know that your journey and your passion for life are appreciated. Be encouraged to follow your dreams! Be encouraged to be you, and change the world around you.
