Dr. Whitman popped another can of Redbull. He'd caught a quick nap after Sheriff Sommers had left. The clinic had closed for the day, but it hadn't been enough. He knew he needed rest, but this was the discovery of a lifetime. Chugging down half the contents of the energy drink, he set the can aside and picked up the claw he had found inside the remains of the cow. Now that he knew what it was, he could see it too. It was the end piece of a centipede's leg. The thing was impossibily large. His entomologist friend had been shocked by it and first thought he was having a joke played on him. It took Whitman the better part of an hour to convince him it was real over the phone. Neither one of them had a rational explanation how such a thing could exist, but it surely did. The ramifications of such a creature were staggering. Clearly, the mutated centipede was aggressive. This thing made the Scolopendra gigantea seem like a teddy bear by comparison.

The big questions, however, remained unanswered. Where had it come from? Was it a lone mutation or part of a new species?

Whitman sighed. He needed to get his hands on the creature to know more about the specimen, but that was an unlikely proposition. Sheriff Sommers wasn't going to believe him until the sheriff saw the thing with his own eyes, and that might just prove fatal.

Further examination of the cow brought in yesterday revealed venom in its blood. Sure enough, there was a venom gland inside of the claw-like appendage. Whitman hadn't run tests on the venom yet. He’d been too obsessed with the discovery of the creature itself. It was likely though that the venom was fast-acting and highly toxic.

The venom of your average garden centipede was rarely fatal to humans, but the venom of a creature this size most certainly would be, given the aggressive nature of the mutation. Even if it wasn't, the sheriff would have his hands full tackling the creature.

Whitman ran his fingers over the claw's hard surface. The mutated centipede would have an exoskelton so tough it would be difficult to stop even with a standard issued department Glock like Sommers carried. Worse, the thing would be fast. So fast, Sommers might not even have a chance to draw his gun unless he knew what he was up against.

The Redbull can bounced against the room's far wall as Whitman threw it in a fit of anger. He had known Sommers for years and knew the man could be hard-headed. This time though, Whitman knew he had to get Sommers to believe him or the whole town might pay the price for it.

He left his desk and headed to the outer part of the office. The waiting area was dark, and there was only the glare of the street lights outside to see by. Whitman never saw the centipedes coming, scampering across the street, until the first one burst through the main office window.
