CHAPTER 12

She settled in under the covers while contemplating her future. One more day down, three hundred and thirty to go. She would miss her room and her bed. She’d miss all of the things she collected over the years. Not knowing how much she could take, she constantly added to the mental list of things she couldn’t live without.

As desperate as she was to rest, sleep still managed to evade her. The possibility of Josh being one of them was disturbing the peace she tried so hard to attain. Not that there was anything between them or that there ever would be. Still, she couldn’t shake him from her thoughts. Maybe she would see him again and could either ask him flat out or observe him and gather enough evidence on her own to decide.

She absolutely believed Remy would lie to her, but she also wholeheartedly knew he wouldn’t let anything or anyone hurt her. He couldn’t control that. She knew now he was compelled to keep her safe. But how could she trust what he’d said about Josh?

I’m probably jumping to conclusions about Josh’s intentions. I doubt he really wants to get to know me. He was just being nice to get in my pants. It’s not like we could have a future anyway.

The space around her began to distort, causing her eyes to strain. Waves of nothing swirled just above her. The charged air threw off zings of what looked like electricity leaping about in front of her eyes. Am I getting a migraine now? Just what I fucking need. She blinked and rolled to her side, determined to fall asleep before her impending headache could set in.

Sabine startled at the sight of Remy lying next to her, face to face.

“How did you do that?” she asked, clutching at her chest.

“Another perk of being a vampire.” Remy cocked one corner of his mouth up in a seductive smirk and propped his head up on his hand. “Why? Not happy to see me?”

“Well you scared me half to death.” She rolled her eyes and turned away from him. “How come you haven’t done that before?”

“You want me to start magically appearing in your bed more often?”

No response from Sabine.

“Okay. I’ll let you in on a little secret.” He scooted against her, his front melded to her back, hand sliding over her belly as he spoke against her neck. “It takes too much power and energy to do it all the time. Leaves me—” Voice lowering to a whisper, his cool breath grazed her ear now, sending shivers down her back and goose bumps over her arms. “Vulnerable.”

Her body wanted to cry out to his, wanted him to touch her all over; wanted to be as close to him as she could get, but her brain wanted no part of it.

“Please, don’t do that. I don’t like it.”

“Oh, but I think you do. Nonetheless, I don’t want an unwilling partner. Takes the fun out of it.” He scooted a few inches away, but continued to lie beside her.
