Letty tried to hide a smile as she and Jean headed back to the hotel. She shouldnât be smiling at all. What business did she have setting her cap for a man that wasnât going to be in town for more than a week at most? Sheâd be a fool to get sweet on Sterling Darling, yetâ¦she was starting to think she was.
Problem was, sheâd never been sweet on anyone before. How would she know if she was getting into trouble? Maybe it was simple attraction and nothing more. Anyone could see how handsome the Darlings were.
âWhat are you grinning at?â Jean asked.
Letty blushed. âNothing. I ⦠was thinking about what to make for dinner.â
âI thought we decided on fried chicken.â Jean swung her arms back and forth in a carefree manner.
Letty laughed. âWhat are you doing?â
âJust thinking. Dora should be back today or tomorrow. What if she got the loan?â
âThen I hope she puts it to good use. The hotel could do with some sprucing up.â
âAre you going to help?â
âIf she wants me to. I have things Iâm sprucing up too.â
âLike what?â
She gave Jean a sidelong glance. âLike my room. Iâve decided to move into my parentâs old one.â
Jean smiled. âIâm glad. Itâs bigger and you had that sheetâ¦not that separating your side of the room from Elamâs was bad, but heâsâ¦gone.â
âI know.â She walked a little further. âWould you like it?â
âExcuse me?â
âMine and Elamâs old room. Would you like to use it?â
Jean stopped. âYou mean, live with you?â
Letty nodded. âWe wouldnât be alone then.â
âOh, my, Iâllâ¦have to think about this. My living quarters arenât bad, just small.â
âYou could help me with the ranch, and I could help you when you need me.â
Jean laughed. âLet me think about it. Iâve grown used to having my privacy. My mother used to drive me plumb loco. When she passed years back, I was surprised I missed her nagging. Then Pa did enough to make up for it.â She hung her head. âI miss him.â
âI miss my Pa too. And Elam.â She started walking again. âItâs all right if you donât want to.â
Jean smiled. âI know.â She sighed. âIn fact, I have a confession to make.â
Letty stopped again. âYou do?â
Jean bit her lip and nodded. âDora asked if I wanted to live at the hotel with her.â
âShe what?â
Jean shrugged. âI told her no. I guess thereâs something about having your own place. I can do what I want when I want andâ¦â
Letty held up a hand. âSay no more. I understand.â She set off again.
When they reached the hotel, they went inside and began to gather what they needed for the evening meal. As soon as they were done, Letty headed home.
When she arrived, she looked at everything Sterling had done the day before. He cleaned the barn, repaired part of the porch railing, and helped her take the rugs out to be cleaned. He even whacked them with a broom for a while. Sheâd never met anyone so willing to work, and it didnât matter what type of work it was.
