For a long time, they snuggled together, Dawson’s arms surrounding her, keeping her close.

Rolling onto his side to face her, he took her hand. “I—want you to know something,”

Cortland’s stomach clenched. She didn’t like surprises, never had, and never would. Remaining silent, she nodded for him to continue.

“I like you. A lot. I feel good about us. And I’m hoping you’re feeling the same.”

Cortland blinked a few times. Am I really hearing this? “Can you be a little more specific?”

It was his turn to pause. He looked at her, his face scrunched into a WTF look. He reached out to pull a coarse blade of grass. He ran it between his thumb and index finger. After a moment, he replied. “I’m glad we had a tug-of-war at the food truck. I’m glad you stalked me at the firehouse. I’m glad we had our first date, even though it was ... difficult for both of us. I’m glad you let me take you out last week.” He stared into her eyes, “And I’m glad we’re together again right now.” He threw the blade aside. “I’m super glad Hannah is your best friend because Andrew is mine, and we can look forward to hanging out together.”

The bottom of her gut fell, leaving a hollow sensation. How was she going to tell him? Her throat tight, she tried. “There’s something you need to know.”

As she watched, his eyes widened. “I’m glad for all that too. But something has happened, is happening.” She stopped, looking out into the lake, wishing she could jump in and escape this conversation.

“Hmmm, go on.” His voice was not gentle. Rather impatient sounding.

She took a deep breath and let it out before continuing. It was a good thing she was sitting down because her knees were trembling. “I told you about my Aunt Faith. The one who died up in Alaska. And I’m pretty sure I told you about spending summers there as a kid, up into my high school years.”

He nodded, his eyes not leaving hers, his breathing slightly faster than normal.

“My aunt left me her home in her will. The entire homestead, really. The house, barns, animals, one hundred acres of land.” She glanced away again. “I have to decide what to do with it all. I love being here in Colby. But I also love it up there in Hope. Those memories are the stuff I dream about. If I could go back to any time in my life, I’d go back to those endless-feeling summers on the homestead.”

Dawson stared at her, not breaking eye contact. “So you haven’t decided yet?”

She shook her head. “No. Not officially. But there’s a reasonable chance I’ll go. It’s free land, a free house. Surrounded by hills, fields, and marshes I roamed with exquisite pleasure. I don’t think I can let it all go. Not for any amount of money.”

Silence engulfed them as the promise of the day dissolved away. She hated to disappoint him. He was a good man. Incredibly handsome and strong, and he enjoyed life.
