CHAPTER NINE

“Hallelujah Chorus” stirred Robyn from her sleep on Christmas morning. She smiled, replaying the melody in her head. Sunshine filtered through her bedroom blinds, forcing her eyelids to flutter open. She took a deep breath, exhaled, but didn’t get up as she processed what would take place that day. She realized she missed attending church and was keeping Tyler from building a relationship with Jesus.

Don’t keep your son from coming to Me for I have come this day to prepare My Kingdom, which is not on this Earth. That is My gift to anyone who comes to Me with the innocence of a child, God whispered. Read Matthew 19:14.

Robyn immediately repented for cheating her son out of his godly blessings in favor of worldly gifts. She reflected on the part-time job she had taken so her son would have a Merry Christmas with clothes, games, and toys. After the break-in, she called her manager at Red Lobster and quit because she had compromised her priorities, but all that would change today.

She would allow Tyler to open one gift before church and the others after that. She, Derek, and Tyler would go to service as a family—a family. Her eyes watered as she thought about the break-in again. She shivered with fear, then realized how God had orchestrated things for her and Tyler not to be home but with Derek.

Though the devil intends evil against you, he did not succeed, God reminded her.

Blinking back moisture from her eyes, she got out of bed and slid to her knees. She prayed and thanked Jesus for her blessings. Robyn barely said Amen when Tyler barreled into the room. “It’s my birthday, Mommy. Happy birthday to me and Jesus!” He was about to jump on her bed, when Robyn gave him a stern look.

Tyler began to tug on her hands. “C’mon.”

“Go wash your face and brush your teeth. We have to get ready for church to celebrate Jesus’ birthday, so open one gift for now.”

Downstairs, Robyn watched her son survey the mass number of presents, more than she had planned at first. Two Scriptures came to mind: Genesis 50:20 and Job 42:12. The end result was better than what she had planned.

Finally, Tyler attacked the box wrapped in Transformers paper. She smirked. It was some type of boat from her mother. Ten minutes later, she coaxed her son upstairs for a bath.

“I want to wear my sweater!” he said as she pulled out his clothes, hoping Tyler would forget about the hideous holiday sweaters he’d picked out for himself and his father.

Derek rang the bell while she was setting the table. She answered the door to his smiling face and happiness shining from his eyes. Under his coat, the matching ugly sweater peeked through. He sniffed the air as she stepped back for him to enter with a bundle of gifts in his arms. The best gift he had given her besides his heart was her son. Not only physically, but allowing her to spend Christmas with Tyler despite the divorce decree that gave him child custody this holiday.
