A more compelling reading of the poem comes from examining the last word: “sing.” The associations with this word are tied to the audience’s expectations. Singing is often beautiful and emotionally impacting. The poem emphasizes the ugly side of life. Examining the ugly side of American history means invoking slavery, the Civil War, and Jim Crow. It also means having to look closely at daily injustices and discrimination. Faced with all this ugliness, how is it that God could expect a black poet to create beauty? Cullen marvels at the heroic resilience of black people and the wisdom of a God who created this resilience in them.
