“We need to make the best of this,” you say.

You stuff wet leaves into your nostrils to help block the stink. Jorge seems driven to figure out the smell’s source. He squats and brushes dust from the boards in the floor. He points.

“It’s down here!” Jorge shouts.

The three of you pull up the boards to find three rotting human bodies beneath the floor.

“That’s right,” Mishil remembers. “Some Neolithic people kept their dead close.”

“This is too close,” Jorge whispers.

Worried about disturbing the grave, you replace the boards. When it’s time to sleep that night, you and your friends are wide awake. It’s impossible to sleep knowing there are dead bodies beneath you.

The next morning, the three of you are exhausted. The villagers seem disappointed in the quality of your work. While learning to build a hut, you climb a ladder to smooth some mud onto an outer wall. It’s becoming difficult to keep your eyes open. Without realizing it, you’ve fallen asleep.

You wake while falling from the ladder, landing with a smack against the hard ground. Finally, you can sleep. Forever.
