The collection of high-rise buildings summarized Southlands. They were built to revitalize our area of Vanguard. Almost as quickly as they went up, the politicians forgot them. They never expected anything to come from it. After the big reveal, the cameras stopped rolling and the media left. Our little business district fell into disrepair.

All except 332 Central.

“Sure, he might be a drug lord. But at least he put a fresh coat of paint on his lair.” From a block away, I had a clear view of the building. Flanked by smaller buildings, Warlord’s base of operations stood at least ten stories above the rest. I wondered if he paid taxes? Compared to the politicians of Vanguard, he might not be that bad.

“Other than peddling drugs. Oh, and using kids as dealers. Dammit, almost forgot his goons at the diner. Hmmm.” Okay, maybe he was as bad as the politicians. Not that it mattered. Taking him out meant another day of freedom. That alone kept my attention.

“What do we have here?”

Three black cars rounded the corner before stopping in front of the building. It was almost comical as four men in well-tailored suits exited the vehicle. The third car did the same. How was it that henchmen could afford designer clothes, and I struggled to find enough quarters for my laundry? The nicest suit I owned was for… “I really need to come up with a codename.”

I couldn’t figure out how police spent days on stakeouts. I had been on the roof for a few hours, and I was already talking to myself. Though I did need a new name. Now that I thought about it, I don’t think Clint or Vex had codenames either? Maybe that could be a topic at the next feeling circle.

“I’m going mad.”

Shaking my head, I leaned on the brick parapet. The only thing that mattered was identifying Warlord and eliminating him. A guard opened the door to the middle car. I expected a kingpin to be menacing. Maybe six feet tall, all bulk. Either that, or he’d be one of those tall, skinny villains with no hair.

“A woman?” Her white trench coat stood out against her bodyguards. They stood close as they escorted her to the door of the building. She slowed, and her men grew agitated, looking around for potential threats. She turned, lowering her glasses as she stared directly at me. I dropped behind the wall, unsure if I had been made.

“How the hell?”

“You’re not a very good spy.”

Apparently not. Gallant had taken a seat in an old lawn chair. I had to stifle a laugh seeing the massive hero wedged into the tiny piece of furniture. I knew the man underneath the mask and remembered every curve of his thighs and the way they sloped toward his ass. What would I do with this information? I still didn’t know. Maybe he had figured out my identity? Speaking a super’s secret identity came with the threat of mutual destruction.

“That’s Warlord’s muscle. If she’s here, it means he’s nearby.
