This section of regulation military gravestones is located in National Cemetery, Brooklyn, New York.

Today there are more than 150,000 burial places in the United States of all types and sizes: church graveyards, family plots, huge urban and small country cemeteries, and the rural style. For veterans and their immediate families there are more than a hundred military cemeteries, including the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific near Honolulu, Hawaii, which is cupped in a dormant volcano and known as the “Punch Bowl.” The newest type of cemetery in the United States is the memorial park, or a cemetery without traditional headstones, monuments, or tombs, just memorial tablets that are flush with the ground. Hubert Eaton pioneered the concept in California and built Forest Lawn Memorial Park into “a great park, devoid of misshapen monuments and other customary signs of earthly death, but filled with towering trees, sweeping lawns, splashing fountains, singing birds, beautiful statuary, cheerful flowers.” Today Forest Lawn is one of the largest cemeteries in the world. In addition to funeral facilities it has concert halls, chapels, a cinema, elaborate gardens, and more than seven hundred statues. For people who want to make a profit running a cemetery, memorial parks are less expensive to maintain than traditional cemeteries, where lawn mowers have to dodge headstones. Although most memorial parks don’t even attempt to emulate Forest Lawn, they are becoming common throughout the United States. In recent years I’ve noticed that even traditional cemeteries often include memorial parks in sections of their grounds. There are even memorial parks on the Internet. Most plots cost less than $15 and feature e-mail tributes, photographs, and, in some cases, a recording of the dead person’s voice.
