Chapter Ten
Friday and Saturday passed with all the slowness of a dried-up stream, the minutes trickling by in slow motion. Kayla had a lot to keep her busy, however. Sheâd baked all the layers for Sarina and Drakeâs wedding cake, and sheâd started the design for Drakeâs cabin cake as well. All she had to do was put them together the morning of the wedding. Then she and her cake team would ice and decorate the cakes before placing them in the delivery van and slowly driving them over to the big mansion. Theyâd do touch-ups once the cakes were in place underneath the big white tent used for such events.
The wedding menu would begin to come together next week. She hired part-time workers to help with catering. Since Sarina had kept the menu simple, Kayla didnât expect any complications there. Light appetizers instead of a sit-down dinner, and Holtâs food truck to feed anyone who might want more. He planned to do small slider buns of pork and brisket with his famous potato salad and more of her mini Man-Muffins. Heâd also promised to help with making those since he planned to arrive on Thursday, two days before the wedding.
The rehearsal dinner on Friday night was being held at a nice steakhouse on the other side of town, so she didnât have to worry about thatâother than sheâd have to practice standing alongside Holt with the bride and groom. How would she deal with him being so involved in this wedding?
Heâd texted yesterday to see if she still planned to come to Sunday dinner with his family.
Yes, sheâd texted back. With cupcakes.
She didnât know how sheâd deal with him at a family dinner either, but she and her staff had baked two dozen vanilla-and-chocolate swirl cupcakes for her to take to his family. Was he setting her up for some sort of test since heâd failed at that with Bethany?
Now, she lay in bed on a crisp Sunday morning, wondering why on earth sheâd agreed to drive to San Antonio to meet his family when she had so much to do. And so many complicated emotions boiling over like bubbling hot water inside her soul. Sheâd missed him the few days heâd been away, but she also worried they were rushing into something theyâd regret.
âNope, not feeling a whole lot of regret,â she said to her empty room. Maybe she wanted to regret it, but being with Holt felt so right at times. Even if she told herself she was rushing headlong into a deep pool of water that was way over her head at other times.
Was she willing to keep seeing him when theyâd both agreed to slow down?
âGo on, honey,â her mother had told her. âWe have all next week to help you. Meantime, even though the café is closed on Sundays, your dad and I can do prep work for a few hours after church so youâll be ready to roll come Monday morning.â
That right there was why sheâd stayed in Blossom.
