Which Art? What Worship?

A Response to Katie Kresser

W. David O. Taylor

As a theologian, it is immensely gratifying to read the work of a careful art historian. In Kresser’s essay I am reintroduced to a world of colorful protagonists, broad movements and sharp countermovements, pivotal events as well as critical works and texts that describe the eras of modern and contemporary art. I am cautioned in some cases against the professional temptation to love ideas apart from their historical context. I am reminded of the ways that a picture, visual or verbal, can hold us captive. And I am inspired to attend closely to particular moments in the twentieth century that define our twenty-first century conversation about worship and the visual arts. In this brief response to Kresser’s essay, I would like to offer a few affirmations, suggest a handful of critiques, and raise a couple of questions.
