Just as quickly as it came, the rain left. Shatima opted to go to the indoor pool rather than back out on the beach. The water was warm. Powering through it helped her take away the stress from everything she just learned. She swam laps until her arms and legs ached. She exited the pool room to find something else to do.

“You’re very late,” Peter told her in distress. “I forgot to tell you that you’re having dinner on a glass bottom boat.”

“I…”

“Please come.”

Peter’s words came out in a hurry, so she quickly showered and dressed. In the morning, she was going to do her own thing. She’d had enough grandiose gestures. How could she enjoy St. Croix if it all revolved around forgiving a cheater? The fact that so many people were invested in her love life was bothersome. Boundaries that had yet to be established were crossed. Why did everybody care so much? Her mind stayed glued to that question as she was whisked off by Peter to the boat.

From the outside, the boat seemed tiny. When she entered, she was surprised at how breathtaking the royal blue decor was. Suddenly, she felt underdressed in a black tank top and the shorts she admired during her shopping trip with Lynn and Selena. An orange haze glowed through the window. The sun was setting. At a lone table sat Rahshaan. The champagne that seemed to be obligatory at that point sat chilling in a Bucket in the middle of the table. Rahshaan was drinking Crown Royal. The boat pulled off and into the ocean. They were instructed to take their drinks to the top deck. The moment Shatima saw dolphins leaping from the ocean, she no longer was tired of grandiose. Give her more.

They were then instructed to go down to the bottom where they marveled at all manner of sea creatures. Not even the zoo back home was this captivating. Someone brought them drinks made with Cruzan Rum. When dinner was announced, they went back upstairs to their table to eat fresh caught seafood by candlelight. The glow of the candle made both of them look enticing to each other.

“I know I’m on repeat right now, but I really am sorry for breaking your heart,” he said softly.

She couldn’t keep her eyes off of his curly hair. She wanted to touch it and remember its softness. Silence fell over her.

“I ain’t never been in love before, but I keep on fucking up. All I wanted to do that night was calm down and get back to you. I never meant to hurt you or embarrass you.”

She took her eyes off of him and focused on the linen and lace tablecloth. “Have you noticed that every time you say you love me something bad happens?”

“I’m trying to fix that,” he told her solemnly.

He let her enjoy her food and didn’t say anything else. Instead, he stared out the window at the view and had to admire it. The only time he left his home town was on a bus taking him to prison or to go on trips for work.
