Memory Performance

Moore’s law (see the section “Moore’s Law” in Chapter 1), which predicts the evolution of technology, relates to the number of transistors in the chip. Since memory is implemented using transistors, then the law provides a good prediction regarding memory sizes in the future. Many current PCs are based on a 64-bit architecture in which 48 bits are used for addressing memory. This represents a huge address space that, even with Moore’s prediction, will be sufficient for a long time.*
