Chapter Six

“Dubai?” I ask. “Are you kidding me?” But I get the feeling they’re not. Partly because I’m looking at the private plane. I can practically feel the air off of the engines as it powers up.

“Where did you have in mind?” Finn shouts to be heard, coming up next to me. He passes me something. I glance down and realise it’s a passport. ‘My passport,’ but not really.

“Putting your skills to work?”

“Come on. It’s time to board. Ever been on a private plane?” Finn asks, glancing back at me.

“No,” I call after him, but he’s out of earshot as I mutter, “And I didn’t picture this being how it would happen.”

Soon we’re in the sky, with a twelve-hour-plus flight ahead of us. Of course, in this kind of comfort, I can hardly complain. At least there’s probably no knife-wielding assassins up here. The champagne the silent hostess served as we boarded the flight was particularly soothing.

Finn is on his laptop, largely ignoring me. But I have to ask. “Why do you guys even own a private jet? Surely your clients can afford their own?”

He glances up at me. “It’s a good way to get people out of places they don’t want to be in.”

“That they can’t get out of themselves?” I ask.

I see the muscle in his jaw twitch. I can tell I annoy him every time the subject of what his work really is comes up. “Yes. That they can’t get out of themselves.”

“I guess you add it to their bill.”

The laptop closes with a definitive click. “Instead of trying to decipher the world of new identities, maybe your detective skills would be better put to use figuring out who wants you dead.” Raising an eyebrow, he adds, “Or at least, who wants you dead the most.”

I pull a face at him. “How should I know? It’s got to be one of your buddies who told them where to find me. Reason would suggest they’re also the ones who hired our would-be assassin.”

“I don’t see it that way.”

“You don’t see it?” I ask, incredulous. “You work among criminals, and you don’t see it?” I throw my hands up when he says nothing. “Maybe, just off the top of my head, someone offered them money!”

Finn’s lips tighten, and he says nothing.

Turning on each other isn’t helping. I top up two glasses of champagne and move over to the seat across from him, offering him one.

Taking it, Finn’s expression softens a little. “You’ll be safer in Dubai. We have contacts there. We can figure out what’s going on.”

I nod, taking another sip. But I’m not so convinced. It’s a strange feeling, knowing someone out there is waiting to cross your name off a list.

“Give me your foot.”

I blink. “Excuse me?”

“You look tense.” Finn puts down his glass. “Give me your foot. I’ll give you a massage.” I raise an eyebrow, and he rolls his eyes. “Not like that.”

I think of telling him no. But then, a foot massage doesn’t sound half bad.
