Chapter 9

End of Days

It was Monday morning; Maria woke up in keen anticipation of the planned burglary later that night. She took the day off school to organise the criminal activities to the finest detail.

The first obstacle of the day was to convince her father to be an accomplice. Maria plan to make her father’s start of the day perfect, priming his thoughts to her way of thinking. Her plan was on the awakening of her father to manipulate him to his optimum mood. She wanted to persuade or compromise his ethics.

Maria walked up stairs, gently knocked on her father’s bedroom door. Maria couldn’t hear a sound from the room. She gently opened the door, peeped her head in to see if her father was asleep. She opened the door and coughed to get her father’s attention. He was half asleep with a hangover and just turned over and ignored her noise. Maria walked over to the open the window. She opened the curtains slightly to allow a gentle breeze into the room. Maria’s father started coughing and stirring from his sleep. Maria walked over to her father and kissed him on the head and said,

” Morning father, just relax in bed. I will bring you fresh coffee and today's newspaper. I’m sure you would love some fresh eggs and muffin for breakfast. Do want your favourite muffin toasted?” Her father's consciousness was awakening to come into the world of reality after a heavy night of drinking. He said, “What time is it?”

"it is about 7 am, don’t worry about rushing to work. I can call them and make an excuse for you, saying you are being delayed.”

He grunted and stretched his arms and yawned like a grizzly bear awakening from a winter hibernation.

Maria went downstairs to prepare her father’s favourite breakfast. In between preparing the breakfast, Maria phoned her dad's office.

“Hello my father will be late because he is fixing a burst pipe that flooded the kitchen”

It was a lie; she used the same excuse to take the day off school. Maria carried her father’s breakfast upstairs to the grizzly bear’s cave. She took the food to her father, who was now sitting up in bed, rubbing his eyes, adjusting to the light.

Maria said,” It smells lovely. Here is the coffee, dad. I have phoned your office; told them you are going to be delayed. You do not need to panic. Just take it easy and enjoy. Dad, you have gone through so much recently in your life, we can change these terrible events and turn our life around. It has been hard for you and mum working hard looking after me and the church. It’s now your time for the world to look after you.”

Maria’s father was drinking his coffee and was unaware of his daughter conditioning him to her way of thinking. He listened intently with curiosity.

“Everyone at the party was asking after you last night. They said your sermons and work have been the flesh and blood of the community.
