Chapter Ten

Commando

Two weeks later…

Viking: Coast is clear. Charges have been dropped. You’re free to come back home.

I stare at the text for the fifth time since it came in. Mae and I have a date today. We agreed to spend the entire day together, walking through town before going to the bigger town for dinner and dancing tonight.

Hitting Viking’s name on my screen, I place the call. I need more information from them. It should have taken longer than what it did.

“Talk,” Viking states, the noise in the background low, but you can tell that there are a group of people behind him.

“Tell me everything that was said? I have a bad feeling about this.” I say, looking at myself in the mirror. I am wearing a black button-up shirt with the club’s logo on the breast pocket, a pair of faded black jeans and polished black combat boots.

“Commando, I promise there is nothing to worry about. Judge dug up some information that linked the detective to Bambi. They also found text messages and e-mails extorting Carleighane. Bambi’s family wasn’t happy when they figured out what happened.” Viking says, as he moves from the loud area into a more quitter one. “Who is she?” He asks.

“Who is who?” I ask, trying not to let on that I’m not ready to go back to New York yet. My Kookum (Grandmother) always told us that home isn’t a place, it’s a feeling. Mae is home.

Viking grunts as he pulls out the chair. Do I want to tell him about what’s going on? Or would it be better to keep her to myself?

Rubbing my hands over my forehead, I sigh. “Her name is Mar Ironside. She is it. I’ve never felt this strong of a connection before. Talking on the phone to her, fuck, even texting her makes me feel like I found my unicorn.”

“Are you coming home?” Viking asks, the one question I have been asking myself over the last week.

“I want to, but I want her.”

“Listen, soulmate love is not something that you find too often. So, bring her down here for a week or two and see how she fits in. If she blends well with the club and the rules, then you’ll know whether or not she is the right woman for you. Commando, I know how you’re feeling. I felt the same way with Racy.” He says, hanging up the phone.

I look at the antique clock on the wall. To anyone else, it would look like a dreamcatcher with a moonlight scene with bears. The moon moves with the hour and the minutes is stars. When it gets to the bottom of the clock, it looks like reflections in water on my picture. Making me twenty minutes from being late.

Me: On my way, baby.

Mae: See you soon, handsome.

Pocketing my phone into my back pocket, I grab my keys and head out the door. Hopefully, this will be the one that eases my mind about us.
