Eleven

TJ spent most of Christmas Eve watching holiday movies on the TV with Zander while Gram pre-cooked some of the food for dinner the next day. All of the wrapped presents were under the tree and the Santa stuff was tucked into the closet under the stairs. TJ hoped she’d made the right choice in getting Zander the gas powered four-wheeler. The day before, she’d taken it for a quick test drive around the orchard and was pleased with the handling and low speed. It was small and made for a child his size. She’d felt bad for having to give away his Power Wheels quad when they’d moved because it wouldn’t fit in the SUV with everything else. He’d learned to ride it before he turned two and had ridden the thing all over their yard in Indiana.

TJ jumped off the floor when she saw the time on the clock. Zander was building a rocket ship with his legos. She pulled her sneakers on, lacing them quickly, then grabbed her jacket.

“Where on earth are you going?”

“I forgot I told Arlee I’d move those tables and chairs to the restaurant for her tonight.”

“It’s Christmas Eve and it’s dark out.”

“I know. I lost track of time playing with Zander. I’ll be back in a little bit.” TJ kissed Zander’s head and hugged Gram, before heading out into the snow. “Of course it’s snowing,” she growled to herself as she got into her SUV. She pushed Arlee’s name on her cell phone as she waited for the car to warm up.

“I was wondering if you’d forgotten what day it was,” Arlee answered.

“No. I’m sorry. I lost track of time. I’m on my way.”

“I’m heading home from the restaurant, so I’ll meet you at the storage barn.”

TJ hung up the phone and drove around to hook up the trailer. Arlee was sitting in her car, waiting for TJ when she saw her pull around, backing the trailer in front of the door.

“Hey,” Arlee said, getting out to unlock it.

“Merry Christmas Eve,” TJ replied, walking up to help her. “Mmm, you smell like pie,” TJ exclaimed, getting a whiff of her in the wind.

Arlee laughed. “We were baking pies all day. We sell take out pie orders for Thanksgiving and Christmas every year. My mom never did that either and it’s a huge hit.”

“Well, it certainly smells good.” TJ pushed the doors open, revealing the bright green John Deere tractor.

“Do you think she’s going to like it?” Arlee asked.

“Yeah. The other one is a piece of shit. Maybe I should’ve just bought her something else for Christmas and got this before the start of the season.”

“No. The farm is Gram’s life, so a new piece of equipment is probably the perfect gift.”

TJ nodded and climbed up into the seat. “Do you remember when you used to ride around the orchard on that old tractor with me?”

“Of course.” Arlee smiled.

TJ grinned and nodded for her to climb aboard. Arlee laughed and shook her head as she grabbed the rail and pulled herself up.
