"ROLL CALL," LYSSA SAID as soon as there were two tables against the door. Randy had headed to the back of the building to secure the other entrance.

"Where's Mark?" asked Edith for what seemed like the hundredth time.

Heidi's gut had been clenching since Quon had banged on her door. The sight of Zach lurching toward them didn't help, and someone had said something about dead people? Were they selling this experience or what?

"All right, everyone! I need you all to be calm. This is not a drill, and it is not part of the illusion we had set up for you."

"What's that mean?" asked Patrick.

"It means we are in an unforeseen emergency situation. Now I'm going to ask again: roll call."

Names flew out, and somehow Heidi managed to catch them all: Xanna, Caleb, Wilson, Opal, Gary, Quon, Noel, Heidi, Kim, Patrick, Bethany, and of course the increasing-in-volume-and-hysteria Edith. Add Lyssa and Randy, and that was fourteen people present.

Where was everyone else?

"Okay, and we know Sidney is accounted for as well," Lyssa finished. "Shit. This is bad. This is beyond bad. This is..."

"You wanna tell us what the fuck I just saw?" shrieked Bethany, who was still shaking in spite of the fact that both Kim and Opal had their arms around her.

"How many of you saw Zach out there?"

At least half of the hands went up.

"Wrong. None of you did. That's not Zach, and this camp has gone from being a simulation to a survival situation."

Edith started trembling enough to rival Bethany. "And Mark...?"

Heidi didn't have to hear the answer to know it. The way Lyssa's face fell, looking for the words, was enough for her.

"I'm so sorry..."

"How did this happen?" asked Quon, shaken at the conversation.

"What is happening?" asked Opal.

"Noel, why don't you go help Randy? See if he'll start a pot of coffee and something for breakfast. This is going to be a long day."

"Since when do you get to give him orders?" demanded Wilson.

"Since he's on the payroll."

All eyes turned to Noel, who looked like he would rather be anywhere than under that kind of scrutiny. "Is this a bad time to mention that I think I'm going to quit?" But he still started to the back of the room toward the food line, behind which was the kitchen area. He stopped before he had taken even three steps, eyes on a point somewhere behind Heidi.

She twisted around in time to see Randy being shoved to the ground by the member of the group who had opted to stay outside.

"You bitch!" Sidney spat. "You were going to leave me out there to die, weren't you?"

Arms folded, Lyssa returned his glare with one of equal intensity. "You wanna calm down?"

"That's easy for you to say. You weren't almost locked outside with a psychotic killer!"

"No, but I also wasn't refusing to follow instructions just because the one giving them was a woman." She waved her hand in a dismissive way. "Sit down."
