Chapter Thirty

Did it have to be the clitmaster?

Kri

Blow this day. Blow it like you’re a snaggletooth prostitute with a super sensitive gag reflex.

I’d use the phrase this day blows, but that implies it’s giving me something in return. So far, it’s only been aggravation and disappointment. And that’s on top of the shitty night I had alone in my bed, pretending I didn’t hear Shep stomping around all night, not to mention the painful nightmare I heard through the door.

The locked door. Stubborn asshole.

Right now, my hand — the right one, no less — is doing a bang-up job of saving my life. It’s wrapped around the oh-shit handle in Sammy’s car as she whips us through the streets of downtown Clearwater.

“Are you sure you don’t want to stop for lunch?” Sammy peers over at me from the driver’s seat. “Although I can’t drink, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t. You look like you could use a stiff one.”

She swerves because she took her eyes off the road for a half second to glance at me.

“Oops,” she tosses casually as she straightens the wheel.

“I’m shocked Sawyer lets you drive anywhere. And I can’t believe I’m desperate enough to get in the car with you.”

“Overdramatic much? You’re worse than my brother.”

I chuckle. “Leo and I have a sense of self-preservation.”

“How was PT this morning? Everything go okay?”

“Yep,” I lie. “Same old, same old.”

I tried to get my physical therapist to green-light me for sparring. He doesn’t think I’m ready and doesn’t want me to get hurt.

Another man trying to micro-manage my life.

“You must be upset about Valerie’s aunt, huh? Sawyer told me. I can’t believe she was murdered in the middle of the hospital and no one saw a thing.”

“Yeah, it sucks, but I’m processing it fairly well, all things considered. I feel bad for the kid. She’s gutted over it, but who wouldn’t be? Although I’m not sure how much time her aunt had left. She was deteriorating fast. Being hooked up to machines is no way to live, but that doesn’t make losing her any easier.”

I rest my elbow on the door and look out the window.

“Then why are you so pissy today? We got in and out of the store without casualties. You said PT was fine and that you’re handling the bad news from yesterday. So what the hell is going on? I’m half-tempted to take you to a smash house. You haven’t huffed and puffed this much in weeks. Sounding like the Big Bad Wolf over there.”

She mimics the heavy breathing of the fairy-tale character before ending up with the hiccups.

“Dammit,” she grumbles. “Am I literally going to have all the annoying pregnancy symptoms and none of the good ones?”

“Are there good pregnancy symptoms?”

“I think so, but I haven’t had any yet. Back to you. Did a single morning of doing girlie shit make you this huffy? Are you horny or something? Do I need to talk to Shep about this?”

A heavy sigh passes my lips, and my shoulders sag.
