Chapter 23 – Promise Her, Not Me

– Kaelen

“Bring it in, guys,” Coach called from up near the house. I felt as if I was on a football team again, which was kind of fun. I looked down at Jaeden and raised my eyebrows.

“Beat you to the house?” I challenged.

Jaeden took off running, and I called after him. “No fair, you got a head start.” I made a show of running almost neck and neck, and Jaeden pushed harder to keep ahead of me. Right before we got close to Coach, I purposefully beat him and then fell to the ground, panting as if that had been a stretch.

Jaeden piled on top of me as if he had single-handedly tackled me to the ground. Yeah, Abigail was right; he was going to make a good linebacker.

“Hailey, will you do me a favor,” Coach asked, turning to his daughter. “Could you get Jaeden his bath? Because he’s going to fall asleep on the way home, and I don’t want Abigail to have to wake him up and try to give him a bath when he’s cranky. I need to have a talk with Jaeden’s mom and dad real quick.”

“Yeah, you did,” I said, trying to force emotions back. “He’s incredible.”

“Sit down, you two,” Coach said in a commanding tone that meant business. He wasn’t either of our fathers, yet he treated us as if he was. We followed him up the stairs of the deck and sat at the patio table.

I fidgeted nervously and glanced at Abigail. Her eyes were firmly on this man, who she so obviously respected. I took a deep breath and met his gaze.

“I’m gonna take a wild stab-in-the-dark guess that you two were never married. Am I right?”

“That is correct, sir.” My nerves made my voice crack. “I’m not proud of what I did.”

“What we did,” Abigail said, reaching for my hand.

“It was not consensual,” I mumbled, not sure if Coach would hear.

“As far as I’m concerned, everything leading up to that moment was consensual,” Abigail said.

“We made some poor choices.” I looked up at Coach. “And I blame myself one hundred percent for our mistake.”

“You listen to me, young man.” Coach leaned forward and pointed his finger in the direction of his house. “That little boy is not a mistake. So don’t let me hear you say that again. And don’t you dare say that in front of him. Jaeden is a gift from God, and however he came into this world is irrelevant. Now, what I want to
