Rosings Park, which has no entail on it, became mine when I turned five and twenty and I can do with it what I will. (The lady who claimed to be my mother was not the only imperious lady in the de Bourgh family.)
Due to point 1, I am unable to fulfil the role of mistress.
It is selfish on my part; I have no desire to live in this huge mansion on my own. From information given to me by Aunt Anne and Uncle Robert, I am aware of the fact you, Richard, will return to your regiment once you are declared fit for combat. Having you both here until you return to the army, and then having Elizabeth here after you return to your unit, will give me great comfort.
You can see this is a reasonable decision, so please accept it in the spirit in which is given. If you are unconvinced consider it is something that would have vexed Catherine de Bourghâyou becoming the master of Rosings Park was what she fought against. Please help me assure her plans are a complete failure.
On a personal note, I wish you two happy and I look forward to meeting you, Elizabeth.
With regards,
Anne de Bourgh (dictated to Mrs. Jenkinson)
âRichard, this is far too much,â Elizabeth objected.
âI agree, Lizzy, but do you want to be the one to deny Anne her wish?â Richard asked. âI do not want to take her estate from her, but from the words in this letter, I know how much it would mean to her to be able to do this now.â
âSo be it. I do not want to be the one to deny her either.â Elizabeth accepted graciously. âI will return to the ladies and send Papa and the others back.â
The four men joined Richard in the study and he handed the letter over to his future father-in-law. âThis certainly does change things,â Bennet whistled in amazement.
Richard looked to the two solicitors. âI want the settlement written in such a way that should I fall before I have a child; Rosings Park will be Lizzyâs. I want no one, not even a future husband, to be able to take Rosings Park from her. It will be hers to do with as she will. In addition, Anne and Mrs. Jenkinson must be assured they will always have a home with us, no matter what.â Richard was adamant on this point.
He and Bennet left the solicitors to write in the additional clauses and word them in a way making it impossible for someone to dispossess Lizzy of the estate. Once the solicitors agreed on the wording of the settlement, Bennet and Richard reviewed their notes and approved them. Phillipsâ clerk was summoned to write out the final drafts.
Once completed and checked over again, both Bennet and Richard signed the settlement and it was done. Everything was official.
