Later that evening Jessica lay on the couch, squeezing her temples between her fingers. So far Steven had just threatened to send the twins home. But Jessica knew that if he discovered she was going out on a date tonight with a college student, and that she was pretending to be in college herself, he definitely would send them packing. So Jessica was using the oldest excuse in the book: the headache.
"Are you sure you don't want to come with us?" Billie asked for the sixth time. "I hate to leave you here all by yourself."
"Thanks, Billie, but I think I just need to let this headache run its course," Jessica explained for what she hoped was the last time. "Don't worry about me, I'll be fine." I'd be much better if you guys would hurry up and leave, she added to herself. Zach was due at seven o'clock, and it was nearly half past six. And she still had to change.
"Leave her, Billie," Steven grumbled. "If Jessica wants to stay home and pout all night, that's her problem." Then he gave his sister a warning glare. "As long as she isn't planning on inviting anyone over."
"Don't be ridiculous, Steven. My head is killing meâthe last thing I want to do is be social." Actually, the last thing Jessica wanted to do was go with Elizabeth, Billie, and Steven to a philosophy lecture at the student union that night. And being social was the first thing Jessica wanted to do. Being social with Zach Marsden, that is. She just had to make sure she got home before they did.
"What time did you say you'd be back?" she asked casually.
"Why?" Elizabeth inquired, narrowing her eyes with suspicion.
"I just wanted to know whether I have time to take a long nap," Jessica replied. "Otherwise, I'll just stay awake until you get home."
"We could hang out for a while after the lecture so that you can have a long stretch of peace and quiet," Billie suggested.
"Oh, that's so sweet of you, Billie," Jessica cooed, calculating how much time that would give her with Zach. Elizabeth and Steven looked grumpy, but neither of them argued.
Finally, after torturous dawdling, they put on their coats. Walking past Jessica's prone figure on the couch, Elizabeth glared down at her. "Don't ruin this for me," Elizabeth hissed. Jessica met her eye and smiled. Elizabeth knew Jessica as only a twin couldâand she obviously knew the headache was an act. But Jessica also knew Elizabeth wouldn't give her sister away.
As soon as she heard the door shut behind them, Jessica leaped up from the couch and ran to the bedroom to change. Within minutes she had stripped out of her jeans and SVU sweatshirt and was dressed in her new golden-brown chenille turtleneck sweater over black leggings and boots.
Jessica appraised her outfit in the full-length mirror that hung on the closet door. The sweater was definitely a positive addition to her wardrobe, she decided. She hadn't been sure when she'd bought itâits color was in the beige family, and Jessica usually went for bolder styles.
