At eleven, Charlie arrived with three dogs. He came in stamping the snow off his feet and blustering about driving conditions that were so bad heâd considered stopping at a motel for the night. The family clustered around, hugging him, and giving him a heroâs welcome as if heâd reached the North Pole by dogsled. Raz sat on the staircase and watched.
Charlie seemed pleased by their attention, but his eyes were red with fatigue. He looked thinner than Raz remembered and pale.
The dogs, a trio of mutts, were so happy to be out of the car that they raced up and down the hall between the people, whining and sniffing the furniture.
âI couldnât leave them,â Charlie explained, setting two duffel bags and a guitar case down in a heap on the floor. âThe guy who was supposed to take care of them decided to go to Florida this afternoon.â
âOf course you couldnât,â said Claire, hugging him again. âWeâre glad to have them,â she added as two of the dogs ran across her feet.
âWhich way did you come, Charlie?â Ben wanted to know.
âCome and have a drink,â said Tom. âYou look like you need one.â
âThatâs Mauraâs dog, isnât it? Did Maura leave her dog?â asked Jane. She looked shocked. Charlie reached down to the little border collie mix who was dancing around him and picked up her front legs.
âWhoâs Maura, Minnie? Do we know anyone by that name?â
âI canât believe she did that,â said Jane.
âOh, Jane,â said her mother.
âWay to go, Jane,â said Tom.
Jane looked embarrassed and angry. âWell, Iâm amazed, thatâs all.â
âYou mean you werenât surprised that she left me? Just the dog?â Charlie said.
Jane gave Charlie a punch on the arm. âYou know I donât mean that, Charlie. I canât imagine anyone letting you go.â
âOf course not. None of us can. Let me help you with your coat, dear,â said Claire.
âBut why are we all standing here in the hall when we have a nice fire in the living room?â asked Ben.
