When we arrive, William suggests going to a bar to continue my enquiry. William already called Jack to say that we were on our way.

He is stood outside his firm waiting for us. The bar is within walking distance, and it happens to be lunchtime. Jack tells us that he has taken the afternoon off to talk to us.

The bar has more patrons than the previous one we visited. We are greeted by a waitress who shows us to a table to have drinks and some food.

It is a contemporary establishment with nice cutlery and a menu to choose from. Jessica and I go ahead with ordering.

While waiting for our lunch, I ask Jack a little about himself. ‘What do you remember about Daniel?’

Jack changes his mind and takes a menu. ‘I don’t know why you are asking. I gave them the same information back in 1982. How can supplying the same information make anything different? The cops never found him back then. What on earth can you do differently that the police didn’t already do?’

I do not explain my methods but give him reassurance, ‘I work differently. I don’t like relying on old witness statements. They never solved the original crime. So, I like to review cases my own way. So, please answer my questions. What do you remember of your Daniel?’

Jack relaxes and begins, ‘He liked playing a detective. He would look for something that wasn’t there. He was fixated with wanting to be a detective.’

William appears surprised. ‘I didn’t know that he wanted to be a cop. I thought he just enjoyed pretending.’

Jack seems to have a different fondness for their best friend; ‘If he had not put his nose in other people’s business, he would still be here. He would still be with us.’

I can see he has never moved on from that night. ‘It was not your fault. If it was not that night, it would have been another time. You would not have been able to prevent it.’

William directs the conversation back onto Daniel’s character; ‘We’re not here to dwell on how he could go missing. We’re here to help the detective build up a profile of the victim.’

Jack apologises and thinks back to his childhood. ‘Daniel did not create any enemies. We were regular kids. We did not find trouble or get into trouble. Everyone liked him. And there was no curb crawler if that is what you’re thinking. This is a small town. Everyone knows each other. And Daniel would never talk to strangers. We shared everything. So, if he got himself into trouble, he would have come to us for help. He would never try to deal with the problem by himself.’

I find his comments helpful. ‘You have no idea how that helps me. You see, you never mentioned this before to the cops, so, it always helps to get a fresh pair of ears.’

Jack almost laughs at my sense of humour. ‘Anything else?’

I want to know more about his state of mind, so I say, ‘You said he would never deal with a problem by himself.
