As the deadline looms, they realize they have increasingly little time in which to do the work, which makes them feel even more daunted about the task ahead.
To make themselves feel calmer and less overwhelmed, they decide to delay the task yet again…
…but they have to acknowledge that the job needs to get done somehow. They then seek out further distractions, and the cycle begins again.
There’s another dark side to procrastination—it damages your self-esteem. When you decide to do something but fail to follow through, you are sending a clear message to yourself: “I can’t be trusted.” If you can’t trust yourself, it’s hard to grow and maintain any self-respect.
Finally, procrastination can have serious consequences for your relationships. If you keep reassuring a loved one that you really will get around to doing XYZ but then never actually do it, they will start to resent you. Procrastination can also set your relationships back if you can’t get around to making a decision. For example, if you procrastinate on deciding to have children, your partner may feel increasingly distressed as the months or years tick by.
Exercise: What Tasks Have You Been Procrastinating On?
Make a list of all those tasks you’ve been delaying. Why do you think you’ve been procrastinating? How long have you been putting them off—days, weeks, months, or even years? How has your procrastination affected your work? How has it affected your personal life?
Are You Making Excuses?
Even if you don’t think of yourself as a creative person, there’s a good chance you are very accomplished at coming up with excuses for your procrastination.
Do any of the following sound familiar?
“I work better under pressure anyway, so it doesn’t matter if I delay it.”
