Chapter VII

TODAY WHEN A PIMP shows up at a party in New York, Chicago, Detroit, Atlanta, or D.C., one thing is certain.

The coke will be out in the open, plenty of it and you won’t have to spend a penny for it. He’ll lay some on you free, because that’s his style. What caviar once was to the wealthy, cocaine is to pimps today.

It’s a sign they’ve arrived, that they can afford the best, and that they’ve got so much money, they can even afford to give the best away. Flash it all around, Jim, the clothes, the multi-colored platform shoes, the diamond bracelets, the solid gold earring worn in the left ear, next year’s Cadillac and eight women selling their white asses and giving all the bread to a black man.

“Let it all hang out, Jack, ’cause I want everybody to know who I am, and what I got, ’cause when you know that, you know something worthwhile.”

Street hustlers in any field feel compelled to advertise. As soon as they make it, they’ve got to let you know about it. Getting there is, indeed, only half the fun. The other half is showing off. This is called style and has its practical side. No one knows this better than a pimp.

“I’ve seen them in the courtroom luncheonette where three or four of their broads have been popped [arrested],” says Joe, the black undercover cop. “And they buy a cup of coffee and a piece of pie and bust out to pay for it. They’ve got a roll, man, two inches thick, one-hundred-dollar bills and they hold them up—bang!—so everybody can see.

“And they start peeling off and peeling off. This is for everybody’s attention, including the broads working for somebody else who might not have that much money. And they see that…”

Black youngsters, particularly in ghettos, idolize pimps, drug pushers, other hustlers—anyone beating the system and making money while doing it.

These youngsters even dress like pimps, favoring the hats with the wide brims, the flashy three-piece suits with wide ties and stick pins, the pink and green platform shoes with six-inch heels.

They can’t afford the cars, the expensive wardrobes, the jewelry or the gold coke spoons. But those working for a coke pusher feel they’re on their way to that kind of bread.

“They party with it,” says Jerry about pimps and cocaine. “It makes them feel like they’re big men if they have their own coke. They don’t have to send out for a spoon or for an eighth of a kilo. Pimps make enough money to keep a lot more on hand, half a kilo, sometimes a whole kilo. Depending on the cut, figure a kilo to be worth $15,000 to $25,000.”

They do more than party with it. They sell it, which for some johns can be a thrilling but expensive evening. “Coke is not just status for pimps,” says Jerry, “it’s a good source of income.”

It’s also a good source of jail time. “One pimp,” says Jerry, “had a favorite out of all his girls.
