Caching solutions: Traditionally, solutions that require fast data access have multiple levels of cache. For all caching needs private to an application or shared/distributed, in-memory key-value stores such as Redis are used on-prem. Most CSPs have PaaS offerings of Redis. Caching solutions are a key ingredient in microservices architecture, enabling services to access data quickly—thereby improving performance.

Data warehousing and big datastores: Typically, enterprises warehouse historical data for many reasons—legal compliance, reporting, insights, analytics, and machine learning, to name a few. Enterprises on-prem employ Hadoop or any of the data warehouse systems for data warehouses or lakes. CSPs offer data warehousing PaaS, columnar datastores that offer parallel query execution with the ability to directly query data in bulk storage. The only difference across CSPs is whether charges are based on pre-allocated compute power, or on-demand compute credits (costs-per-query).
