Chapter Twenty-Three

COCK-A-DOODLE-DOO!

Zack jumped back and then leaned forward to stop from slipping off the roof. “What the heck?” He heard the door open and then Lizzy laughing. “How did he get up here?”

“He flew right to you from one of the tree limbs. I thought for sure you were going to fall off the roof.” She held a hand over her eyes to block the bright sun shimmering against the snow.

“He’d make for a nice dinner.” Zack lifted his brow. The thought of some fried chicken made his mouth water and his stomach tighten.

“If you can catch him, I’ll make a pleasant chicken dinner.” She grinned. Catching a chicken was one thing, but a rooster was a whole different experience; most males would fight for a hen or for their territory.

With each step Zack stuck his boot down into the snow to keep his leverage. But the bird still had the advantage. Funny thing was, the rooster seemed to like the standoff. He could have just flown off, but he chose to stay and mess with Zack.

“What’s going on up there?” Lizzy called to him and took another step back so she could see. “Is he that hard to catch?”

“He has it in him, that’s for sure.” Zack didn’t want to tell her that the bird was taking him to task. If it was a horse or a stubborn bull, that would be one thing, but this black rooster was holding his ground. “He’s quick.”

“I take it you’re losing the battle.” She took another step away from the cabin and laughed out loud as he fell to one knee, jumped up, and went after the conniving bird again.

“Are you all right?”

“Just tired. He’s wearing me out.” He wasn’t about to admit defeat.

The rooster took a sudden leap and landed, running as fast as he could, head bobbing and all. Zack threw up his hands and came down the ladder. Lizzy came up beside him and watched the rooster go. “What’s he in a hurry about?”

“You got me. But I think I won.” He turned and grinned at her, enjoying the sparkle of her eyes against the snow.

“That was entertaining.” She was still watching the rooster with a smile.

“It would have been better if we were plucking him right about now.” He realized what a bad sport he was and chuckled a bit.

“Why are you laughing?” She started to the cabin but stopped when he did.

“I’m pitiful, figuring I had the upper hand on that rooster.” He shook his head, realizing how much fun it really was, especially having her there with him.

“All this messing around makes me feel guilty.” Her smile disappeared, and she looked toward the road where they’d driven in the day before.

“Having fun makes you feel bad?” He lifted his brow in question.
