The day after the party, Consort Egilka charged out of his office and into the corridor, nearly running Korkla over as he did so. The prince’s intended put on the brakes just in time to avoid the collision.

“Sorry, page, I wasn’t—it’s you. Dramok Korkla.”

“Yes sir.” Korkla managed a hurried bow before the flushed Egilka.

“You’re best buddies with Clajak, always whispering with him. Where is he? We’re supposed to be going over the points of the next council meeting, and I have somewhere to be in an hour.”

Korkla’s face heated at Egilka’s accusatory tone. He had been talking to Clajak half an hour before. “He dashed to his suite, sir. He forgot to download the itinerary. He was planning to be right with you.”

“Sure he was, until something else distracted him. Go get your friend and escort him here personally. I expect you to deliver him within five minutes. And tell that aide of his to answer his damned com when I call!” Egilka swiveled on his heel and stormed into his office.

Korkla sighed and set off for the in-house transport.

He came out on the living level and stated his mission to the Royal Guards stationed there. After they confirmed his privilege to be on the floor, one said, “The crown prince was called into the empress’ chambers when he entered this level. If you don’t find him in his own suite, he’ll likely be there.”

Korkla was delighted with the opportunity to speak to Empress Irdis. He’d been hoping to thank her for letting him attend the royal function as a guest. He’d taken full advantage of the opportunity as she’d suggested, making new acquaintances and improving others. A couple of councilmen and a governor had asked him about his future plans, a sign they might be looking for staff members…potential steps up in rank.

He checked the prince’s suite first, as propriety demanded. Clajak didn’t answer Korkla’s summons.

As he turned, happy to win a chance to speak with the empress, he saw someone disappear around the corner to the level’s main corridor…as if they’d been standing in the small decorative alcove a few feet away the whole time he’d been there. Korkla must have walked right past them.

Clajak? No. His quick glimpse that told him nothing else would have at least betrayed the head full of steel-colored hair. Emperor Yuder and Clajak’s unique hue was recognizable at a glance.

Korkla went to the main corridor and saw no one. Most likely a member of the cleaning staff. An unobtrusive storage closet was nearby, if he remembered correctly.

He headed to Empress Irdis’ rooms. Outside the closed door, he moved to push the announce button.

His thumb hovered over the intercom activation. Korkla paused to regard a small, silvery wire sticking out between the door and its frame. Odd.

He almost signaled the announce. But instinct took over, especially when he thought of that shadowy, unidentified figure in Clajak’s wing.

Instead, Korkla hurried to the guards standing sentry at the transport. He quickly explained what he’d witnessed, and one of them returned to the empress’ door with him.
