CHAPTER FIVE

Kristof eyed Dix warily as the other shifter picked up the overturned lamp, snapped it on, then rooted around before finding and shrugging into his discarded flannel shirt. When he was certain that he wouldn’t have to fend off a renewed attack, Kristof relaxed slightly, even though he knew letting his guard down was a bad idea. “I need something to wear,” he said.

“Your clothes are probably still wet. You okay wearing something of mine?”

Like he had a choice? Though he wasn’t uncomfortable with nudity – most shifters weren’t – something about being naked while Dix was clothed set him on edge. Kristof nodded.

While Dix disappeared into the other room, Kristof reviewed the last few halcyon minutes of the fight, and of the argument that followed. He realized he was lucky to have survived the assault. Dix was a Rogue Alpha, and one of the biggest shifters he’d had the displeasure of meeting.

Dix also insisted that he was innocent in Haley’s death. That wasn’t what had Kristof’s hackles up. It was the fact that Kristof believed him. Unless he was one hell of an actor, Dix couldn’t subvert physiology. Kristof smelled truth on the other shifter. It also made Kristof realize something had been odd about the encounter with Slane and the Bowsprit Betas, but he’d been too upset about Haley’s death to examine his suspicions closely. Was Kristof being played by the Pack? He struggled with a sinking feeling.

Or maybe the discomfort was owing to having his ass almost claimed by a Rogue Alpha.

Without warning, a shudder went through Kristof at the memory of Dix’s superheated length pressed against his spine. Dix’s hot mouth clamped on the back of Kristof’s neck had sent a bolt of pure erotic lust through him. Kristof had damn near submitted, and the capitulation shocked him.

Kristof had had a lot of shifter booty over the years and enjoyed his fair share of getting laid. Some of his hookups had even tried to Claim him. But Kristof shut them down early on or had made it abundantly clear that his Lone nature would never tolerate mating.

But none had ever gotten as far under his defenses as Dix had. Kristof’s face warmed as he remembered how he had nearly become Dix’s little bitch, ass up and ready for mounting. Even now, the memory of Dix’s scent made his groin tighten. Dix’s taste, the timbre of Dix’s voice—

“You okay?”

Kristof whirled. Dix was standing in the doorway of his cabin holding a pair of threadbare jeans and a sweatshirt.

Kristof swiftly turned his back to the other shifter to conceal his burgeoning erection. “Yeah. I’m just…tired.”

No answer.

Kristof looked over his shoulder. Dix’s cocoa-dark eyes were assessing him through a thick bank of lashes. “You didn’t crack a rib or anything while we were fighting, did you?” Dix asked. “I can get rough.”

Sensuality shivered down Kristof’s spine. Kristof shook his head mutely, struggling.

“Well…good. Here.” Dix came closer and thrust the clothes at him. “It’s almost dawn. You want something to drink before we get started on this mess?”

Kristof snatched the proffered clothes.
