Chapter 12

Lara

It’s easy to read the sadness in Markus’ features as he speaks of Vorek. I want to know more about what happened between them, but I also don’t want to push Markus to talk about something that is obviously painful for him.

As I scroll through the various images on the screen. It’s so strange how all these different races look like beings we regard as myths on Terra: Dragons, Elves, Vampire, Fae, Werewolves.

“What is wrong, Lara?”

“Nothing,” I reassure him. “It’s just that your people and the others… they look so much like creatures my people believe are only myths and legends.”

He frowns. “It is possible our races may have come to your world long ago. But, if that is truth, I do not understand why they would not have stayed and conquered it for their empires.”

“Are all of these other races your enemies?”

“It is… not that simple.”

“What do you mean?”

“We have been in various states of conflict with each other for thousands of cycles.” He pauses. “We have a treaty of non-aggression with the V’loryns and the Aerilons, but… as I mentioned, there is still much mistrust between us.”

I sigh. “There’s so much about this part of the universe I don’t know.” A faint smile tips my lips. “As a navigator, I hate the idea of being lost.”

He leans forward. “What would you like to know?”

“Everything.”

He flashes a handsome grin. “Then, I will do my best to tell you.”

Markus begins giving me the history of his people and the others. It is interesting how these five races have been at odds with one another for so long. Even now that they have a treaty of nonaggression, they still continue to mistrust each other.

He pulls up a map on the display and holds it up to me. “These are the various areas of the planet we have charted, so far. Here”—he points to a tiny dot on the screen—“is our shelter.” He traces a line toward a towering mountain. “This is the mountain our ship crashed into. We have claimed it and created a network of tunnels to serve as our compound, here.”

“What is this area?” I point to a location not far from this one.

He frowns. “That is the V’loryn’s territory.” He points to another area beside it. “And this belongs to the Lycaons.”

I glance at the shelter then look to him. “It seems like you still have use of quite a bit of technology, despite being stranded here.”

“We scavenge what we can, and our engineers have been able to repair many of our ship’s functions.”

“But, no one has been able to repair their ship so they can try to leave?”

Drawing in a deep breath, he turns his focus to me. “Each of us has tried. Our ships were badly damaged. None have the power necessary to break atmosphere. Our distress signal has gone unheard all these cycles.” He sighs. “We are fortunate we are even able to have communications on this world. At first, the mountains made it difficult.
