Chapter 6

His touch scorched through her, and for the first time since stepping out of the water, she was fully aware of her nakedness. Normally, when she was this close to a man, she instinctively drew back and covered herself. And, on the rare instance that she did give in to her longing, it was always with burning cheeks and deep, unshakable embarrassment.

Not tonight, though. Maybe it was the rolling fog, the darkness or the night, but she didn’t think so. No, it was something about Silas, the way his gaze roved over her like he’d never seen anything like her before.

And, if his expression was anything to go by, he liked what he saw.

And then, as his gaze lingered on her skin, his fingers followed—trailing the plane of her stomach, tracing the underside of her breasts, flitting gently over her nipples as she let out a little gasp.

“I’ve wanted to see you like this since the second I first laid eyes on you.” The rumbling hunger in her voice sent a shiver up her spine, and the throbbing between her thighs heightened, nearly to the point of pain.

“I…,” she said, but nothing came to mind. There were no words to express what this moment meant to her. What being near him did to her. The warmth in her cheeks spread down her neck, over her breasts. He hummed, tracing the column of her throat, and she swallowed hard as he made his way to her mouth.

Running the pad of his thumb over her bottom lip, he asked, “Why so shy?”

“I just…” She shook her head. “Nobody’s ever said something like that to me. About,” she swallowed, “seeing me this way, I mean.”

“Then every man you’ve ever met was a damn idiot. Not that I’m complaining.” He caught a piece of her hair between two fingers and twisted it, and she watched, transfixed.

It was like his every movement was designed to torment her. His touch was so light but distracting, and each time she thought he might close his fingers around her waist and pull her toward him, he did something else to make the space between them that much more agonizing.

Maybe he was trying to force her to make the first step. To finally take his lip between hers and taste him. To kiss the skin of his throat, the hard muscles of his chest and lower…

She shifted, trying to ease the still mounting tension inside her, all the while forcing herself not to look down again at his thick need. She could leave now. She could run…

A faint smile tilted his lips, and as if reading her mind, he said, “I’m not going to do anything unless you tell me to.”

“W-why not?” Her voice shook.

“Because I won’t. You’ve had a lot thrust on you. It’s time you decided what you want for yourself.”

“And if I say I want you? What happens then?”

Her breath caught as his hooded eyes surveyed her again, the heat of his gaze burning every inch of her already-heated flesh.
