Chapter 3: Wounded Bear

It lumbered in one afternoon. She hadn’t seen it since that night. Its heavy paws creaked against wooden floor. It bashed and dragged against the wall, and then toppled in a far corner of the living room.

Isabelle listened and, when it became completely quiet, made her way out to the living room. There it was. A massive black bear heaving with all its might as it lay on the floor. It writhed in agony, feverishly pawing at its upper leg.

He’d already gnawed off the hair. There was a perfectly round wound at the center. The skin around it was blue and his blood was dripping black. Isabelle didn’t know what to do or if she should do anything; even though he may be trained, he could snap at any moment and attack her. She kept her distance, but it hurt to watch it; she felt so helpless standing there. She couldn’t run and get help, all she could do is watch--God, she didn’t even know how or where to get water for the poor thing.
