Deanna

My face flushed as I glared at Khenja, too overwhelmingly angry for one moment to say anything at all.

I hadn’t expected our...moment...to mean much to him.

Although, given his still-glowing chest and all the stuff about mates, I figured I could be forgiven for thinking it might have.

I wasn’t stupid or naive. I hadn’t believed for a second that Khenja had fallen head over heels in love with me because of something as simple as biology.

But I hadn’t expected him to sneak away, either. And that part hurt. More than that, it made me so angry I could feel flames of rage licking my temples.

Khenja’s expression, on the other hand, remained perfectly cool as he turned back to the locker. He pulled out a jacket and slipped it on. The glow of his amre disappeared behind the thick fabric.

“That word didn’t translate,” he said. “But I suspect it means you disagree with my decision.”

“You’re admitting that you were going to run out on me while I was asleep?”

“Trying to deny it now would be foolish.” Khenja went back to loading his belt. “And an insult to what just happened between us.”

At least he realized what a colossal shit he was being. “Then you’re damned right, I disagree. In fact, I’m downright pissed.”

He closed the locker and turned back to me. “That is unfortunate.” Without another word he brushed past me and left the cockpit, heading for the exit ramp.

I followed right on his heels. “Don’t ignore me, Khenja. Were you even going to leave me a note or was I just going to wake up alone?”

“To what point and purpose? I can’t write your language. Can you read mine?”

She blinked. “No, but--”

“Then a note would have been an empty gesture.” I slipped a durasteel blade into the sheath on my belt.

“Okay, first lesson about humans? Empty gestures are a big deal to us.”

“That explains why you offer them so frequently,” he said. “You agreed to follow my instructions but you did not. You were meant to remain silent and you were anything but. I told you to run and you refused.”

With each new accusation I felt myself shrink back a little. There was no venom in his face or voice. There didn’t seem to be much emotion coming from him at all. He was just as cold and distant as he had been when he picked me up.

“I told you to eat and rest in my bunk while I was healing. Did you do either?”

“Alright, so I’m bad at this--”

“Awful at it,” Khenja said. “And it almost got us both killed.”

I racked my brain for a defense to his accusations, but couldn’t find a single one.

“You could have waited until I was awake to say all of this. Why didn’t you?”

Khenja’s smooth facade fell. His mouth hung open for a second and his chin quivered. He must not have been expecting me to ask that question. Then he took a deep breath and shrugged.

“What does it matter?” he asked. “You know now.
