Chapter 17: Tenem

I hear Cassie bellowing after me as I storm down the hall. My whole body ignites, urging me to go back to her, the echo of her cry making me break into a sweat.

I press on. I keep moving forward without looking back. Images of her naked body flash through my mind. I had her beneath me. She writhed and arched and begged for more just as I wanted. Her pants echo in every corner of my mind. Her moans coat my insides. My erection grows tighter against my leg when her words course through me again: I want you.

She wants me as much as I want her. The scent of her sex filled my lungs and the room and is now trickling down the hall after me. My insides are twisted and contorted, my soul screaming for more, begging me to mate her and send her into a pleasure realm that neither she nor I have ever experienced.

My only solace is the elevator. It opens as soon as I approach and closes, shielding me from the burn to retreat. I slam my fist into the halt button, the elevator shudders to a stop, and I sink to the floor, gasping for air.

Calm, Tenem. I hear Yorah's voice in my subconscious. I take deep breaths, squeezing my eyes shut, praying for all of it to go away—Cassie's naked body begging me for more, her smell, her breath…

More than anything, I banish the image of Kayla from my thoughts just as I banished myself from my own apartment.

It happened for less than a heartbeat, but envisioning Kayla beneath me was enough to squash any chance I had of mating with Cassie. The memories of pain and loss overcame the desire instantly, sending a chill through me that killed any hope I had of pleasuring my new soul bond.

I almost lost her already. Gluckplyk would've killed her, just as he did the other female he accidentally had his way with. Or worse, Cassie would've shrieked, pulling the Roa guards' attention, causing them to either take turns or bring her somewhere else. Somewhere worse.

I cringe. It's happened before, and it will happen again. It might happen to Cassie. It did happen to Kayla. No, the worst happened to my Kayla. And if I'm not careful, that indescribable torture will happen to Cassie, and I'll have to watch.

All because we almost mated, our souls bonding as one.

"No," I grunt to myself. "You don't love her."

I force myself to my feet. I cannot let my own selfish, animal desires bring both Cassie and me to our knees. I let it happen once before. Our foolishness destroyed us both. I care too much about Cassie and escaping to let it happen again.

I press the up button to visit Yorah's apartment. I know he won't be home, and he also won't mind if I sleep in his apartment. He trusts me, so I let myself in and take a cold shower when I arrive.

It doesn't help, and I eventually fade to sleep with Cassie's wetness entering my thoughts again.
