20 Paul

The warning came and both Lawrence and Rico hurried to grab onto the straps on the wall.

“Make sure you hold on tight,” the Ramjin said with a smirk. “Nah, don’t face the wall and hold on like that. Put the wall at your back and put your hands through the loops, then grip the top of the loops as if your life depends on it. Trust me, you don’t want to end up slamming against anything.”

I scoffed at this. Could Gnasher be any more pathetic? Trying to frighten us like that, as if everything else they’d done to us so far wasn’t enough.

The second warning sounded and I watched as Gnasher opened a cabinet built into the wall and took out some straps that he began fastening to anchor points on the chair. I sat on my bunk, arms crossed, and glaring while he did his whole fake out routine. The engines began to rumble and the fucker even strapped himself in.

“Paul! Move!” Rico screamed at me.

I shook my head. The bone rattling rumble of the engines as they fired put on a good show, I had to admit, but this was no ancient rocket with the accompanying g-forces. The shaking grew worse and I began to reconsider my position.

Fuck! I forced myself to roll off of my bunk and crawl to the wall with the hand holds. The ship bucked as I stood myself up, causing me to hit my shoulder and side of my head against the wall. Goddammit! That hurt like a motherfucker. I gritted my teeth and blinked rapidly, trying to make the stars go away. I finally managed to get first one hand in, then the other, and pressed my body back against the wall, bracing my feet.

More pitching and rolling. I could hear the ship fucking groaning, and that was when I finally knew true terror.

“Please don’t let this bucket of bolts come apart,” I prayed to whoever was listening. Not that I held out much hope that anyone was, because helloooo, they’d not answered any of our prayers thus far. Just as I decided that I must have seriously pissed off someone very important in the cosmos to have earned this fate, the shaking and sounds of strain ceased.

I turned my head to regard Gnasher. He was grinning like a maniac. “Yeah! Now that was a ride!” he enthused as his fingers flew to release himself from the webbing. “You guys all right? No injuries?”

“I think I’m okay,” Lawrence said. “My whole body is sore.”

“I’m fine,” Rico snapped, “But I saw Paul smack his head.”

“I’m fine!” I snapped.

“Good to hear, but we’ll have the doc check you out to be sure,” Gnasher said, unlatching the webbing and straps from his seat and returning them to cupboard. “Go lay down on your bunk until he gets here.”

Asshole! He just wanted to make sure I was able to do the dirty work they’d kidnapped me for.

“Actually, I think I pulled my wrist,” Lawrence said, grimacing as he flexed his wrist and wriggled his fingers.
