“I don’t want a lot for Christmas

There is just one thing I need.”

Mariah Carey’s beautiful voice crooned through the speakers as every other woman in the house, along with our kids, and I decorated the Christmas tree. A tree that every child who was big enough to talk had pretty much begged their parents to get one. The men went out this afternoon, and when they came back, they were toting big ass Christmas tree through the house, and all the decorations and stuff that they’d bought where in the car. Now, I didn’t really know the rules that came with renting this beautiful cabin, but I can guarantee that we weren’t supposed to have a Christmas tree.

Every man in there was willing to do whatever they had to do, just to see their kids happy, which is why they’d gotten the tree in the first place. I loved everything about what was going on right now. I promise you, all that was missing was my son. God, my baby would have loved this. Vonte loved Christmas just as much as I did. I remember my last Christmas with him. He and I dressed up in matching onesies and did the tree together. It was a tradition for Vonte and I to decorate the tree together. I swear, I wouldn’t do it until he got home.

Look at me now… I was going on my second Christmas without my baby. Since he was so tall, he would always be the one to put the angel on top of the tree when we finished. Now, I was watching my three children (two of them, who I gained), run around and put different ornaments on the tree. Little Miami wasn’t doing anything but making a mess and breaking ornaments. He, Maya, and Taniya were all in their Christmas pajamas, and I got all giddy inside at how adorable the three of them looked. Every child in the house was in their Christmas pajamas. As soon as we finished decorating this big ass tree and I got the kids to sleep, I was going to soak in the tub. I loved that tub in our bathroom. I had been using it for the past two days that we’d been there.

“Whew, I am tired,” I heard Quannie say from behind me as she flopped down on the couch.

I looked at her and laughed. Before two days ago, I didn’t even know her. The way she and I had gotten into these deep ass conversations, you would have thought that I’ve known her all my life. She was an early bird just like me, so yesterday morning, when I came outside to sit on the porch and enjoy this beautiful, cold weather, I was surprised that she was outside too.

I don’t even remember how the conversation started, but we just started talking. I told her about Vonte and how I lost him, and she told me about how she spent almost eight years in prison behind her boyfriend at the time.
