Chapter Eleven
There was such a lost look on Averyâs face, in the way her shoulders slumped, that Hunter wanted to pull her into a hug and shelter her from whatever was going on between Candice and Paul. While he edged closer to the doorway that held her up, he hesitated from reaching out as Paul glared at him. Then something hardened in Averyâs eyes, and he wished the lost girl would come back.
âYes.â The woman seemed to shrink in front of them as she focused on Avery.
âYou told me my dad died.â
âIt was easier than the truth that he didnât care.â
Paul bristled and stood taller, as if that would make him more intimidating. âI had to go back to college.â
âLeaving me here.â
âYou could have joined me.â
âAnd live in a tiny studio apartmentâaway from my family, my friends, doing nothingâwhile you had all the fun.â Candice straightened her shoulders. âWe were better off here.â
âIâm twenty-eight. I deserve to know the truth.â Avery rubbed her forehead as if pressing back tension. The action didnât bring any color back to her cheeks, and Hunter prepared to brace her if necessary.
He was proud of the way she didnât fall apart. Didnât walk away. What were her parents thinking to have this argument in front of her?
âThe truth is this man didnât care enough to see you . . . to be a part of our lives . . . to give any substantive support. He walked away and never looked back.â Candiceâs lips flattened as a vein pulsed at her temple. âI should have known you were at Fine Press. Iâd have stopped spending my money there. Why bother coming now? Whatâs in it for you?â
âMaybe Iâve seen the error of my ways.â
âMore likely you need something from us.â
Avery lifted her hands, then turned to Paul. âStop, please. Can we come back to why you thought Elaine was your daughter?â
âHer voice in the blog postsâit sounded like your motherâs writing.â
âI havenât written in years. I had to raise a child by myself. Keeping a bookstore alive sucked everything from me.â
âI need you to stop.â Avery held her hands in front of her as if that would stop the flow of vitriol from her mother. âHow does his comingââ She pointed at Paul. ââconnect to Elaineâs sudden departure?â
âHe ran her off.â Her voice sliced through the air as she turned toward Paul. âThereâs a reason Elaine was hiding here. But if youâre not her dad, then someone else is and sheâs running from him. I think.â
Paul studied Avery as if he hadnât heard what was said about Elaine. âShe has my momâs eyes.â
âAnd your straight nose.â Candice might have acknowledged a family resemblance, but it didnât look like sheâd give an inch on anything else.
âI canât process this right now.â Averyâs fingers fidgeted along the edges of her dress, and she turned to Hunter. âCan we leave?â
âAbsolutely. Paul, you and Candice need to figure this out.â He approached Avery, noting her over-bright eyes, and offered his arm.
