She did sing, for the whole group. And she had a lovely voice. Jeremy listened as Gabi sang “What Child Is This?” with such a soulful, gentle rendering that he fell in love right there on the spot.

Amazing. In a crowded room, in his own home, with his family and friends gathered around, Jeremy had at last found the woman he’d been waiting for all of his life. He’d traveled across the South to find his grandparents, to find some sort of closure and understanding about himself and his birth, to find some part of himself in his biological father, only to come back home, still searching, still full of questions and bitterness.

And the very thing he’d needed the most had been right here all along. He supposed things did happen for a reason. Gabi was a widow now. And he had been lost in a vast wilderness of pain and longing.

But no more. No more, Lord, he thought, thanking God for the suffering that had brought him to this place. Jeremy gazed at Gabi as she sang, and felt the warmth of her charm and her practical nature covering him with hope and peace. But he also saw the veil of her doubt as she sang.

And he decided that, somehow, he had to overcome that doubt and make her his own. Somehow, they had to make this work. God hadn’t brought him to this place, to this woman, only to abandon him, had He?

Show me the way, Lord. Show me the way. Jeremy kept that silent prayer in his heart as he listened to Gabi sing.
