The grapevine was fast and vivid. For the next few hours, work was only toyed with as one more snippet, one more detail was passed along. The prevailing feeling seemed that of shock and sadness. No one wanted to believe Sam could have acted the way he had.

Carrie sat behind her desk with her head nestled in her folded arms, which rested atop a pile of extra manuals. Her bloodied blouse had been rinsed as clean as she could get it, and now she wore a company T-shirt, her bare arms covered with goose bumps.

She’d gone over and over it again in her head, trying to rationalize her actions earlier this morning. Someone—she didn’t who—had called her, asked her to get down to the shop, there was a problem. Then he’d hung up. Another call had come right on its heels. He’s been drinking. You know what the policy says. He’ll have to be tested, won’t he? He’s—we’re—not safe anymore.

Cash hadn’t arrived yet. She’d had no choice but to go.

Carrie vaguely heard the door open and the whoosh of the cushion as someone sat in the chair in front of her. Still she didn’t move or look up. Every part of her felt numb. All but her heart, and it was so heavy with regret and sadness it paralyzed her.

“Are you okay?” Cash asked in a husky voice. He sounded as bad as she felt. She heard him stand and walk to her. In the next seconds he was on his knees beside her, swiveling her chair toward him, her head and arms reluctantly giving way to the motion.

She took her time looking at him, afraid what she might see in his eyes. Beyond that, she was more worried she’d throw her arms around his neck and cry. It wasn’t the crying that would matter. It was the touching. She didn’t think she could have his arms around her now and deny what she’d been feeling for some time.

Cash lifted her chin with his finger and she saw that the warm blue was back in his eyes. “I—I’m really sorry, Cash.” She jerked her hand toward the manuals on her desk.”In theory it was good…but look what I did.” She bit her lip to keep from crying.

“Carrie, listen to me.” He lifted her chin again.”This problem was a long time in coming. If anyone’s to blame it’s me…for ignoring the signs all these months.” He stood and walked to the glass wall.”All I could think of was building the business, making more money. The faster the better. Clean up the mess later.” He turned back to her.

“Now I have a real mess.” He cocked his head and studied her a moment.”I could use some help if you’re up to it…or I could take you home and we can deal with this tomorrow. Your choice.”

As exhausted as she felt, she knew action would probably help. She tried to stand, but dropped back into her chair.”Where do we start?”

He closed the distance between them with two fast strides and placed his warm hands on her shoulders.
